glacier skiing in North America. |

Last week's question:
Excluding Jay Peak VT and the highest elevations of New
Hampshire's Presidential Range, what is the snowiest
place in New England? |
|
x |
Answer:
After years of weather watching, we've come to the
conclusion that it is
Diamond Pond NH
which is located at the northern extremity of a plateau
in the Great Woods of Northern New Hampshire; between
the valley town of Colebrook and Dixville Notch. The
plateau has a perfect latitude and trajectory for
catching upslope snow squalls. On a typical snow squall
day, Diamond Pond might get 6" while Dixville Notch gets
2-3" and Colebrook a dusting to an inch. This
winter's 200" plus was not a record for Diamond Pond as
the annual snowfall there is typically 200-250". |

Previous question:
What U.S. ski areas have the driest snow? |
|
x |
Answer:
Utah claims to have the
Greatest Snow on Earth, but the driest snow (at least in
the U.S.) is actually in Colorado. According to ski area
snowfall statistician Tony Crocker, Alta UT has an
average water content in its snow of 8.5% while
Steamboat, Vail and Wolf Creek CO have water content
ratios of 7.0%. 6.9% and 6.0% respectively. Taos NM is
also noteworthy at 6.2%. Alta's snow
is "wetter" because some of its storms are fueled by
moisture from the Great Salt Lake.
