Whirligigs
aka Wind Wheels |
|
Whirligig History. Whirligigs are whimsical,
wind-driven expressions of American folk art that first
appeared in the United States nearly 200 years ago.
Traditional designs depict common characters of early
American life. Old-timers called them "comic
weathervanes. The faster the wind blows, the more
furiously the figures move. Some swear the resulting
vibration keeps moles out of their lawns and gardens.
Whatever their practical use, the pure pleasure of
watching these whirring, gaily painted wind toys counts
for their timeless popularity.
Materials and Construction.
Our whirligigs were
originally designed by craftspeople in New Hampshire's Monadnock
Mountains and are now made in Maine. They're hard to
find, but we always have a good supply because our
whirligig maker's workshop is "just down the road
apiece" from our new store in Rangeley Maine.
They are roughly 16" long by
11" high and weigh approximately 2 lbs. Each is
constructed of solid white pine (no plastic or plywood),
sealed with durable acrylic enamel paints and
painstakingly finished with silk-screened and/or
hand-painted detail. A lightweight fan/propeller drives
the action. The base pivots freely over its mounting
nail that can be driven into a post, deck railing, etc.
Every whirligig is tested for functional integrity prior
to packaging, ensuring enjoyment for years to come.
Price and
shipping. All of our whirligigs are the
same price and come smartly packaged with
a FREE
Davis Hill weather stick. The weather stick fits
neatly inside the box with the whirligig, making it a
really nice gift.
$44.00 plus $7.50 for shipping in the USA or Canada. All
whirligigs are in-stock and will be shipped on the next
business day. |
