History of this picture. When Huffman arrived at Fort Keogh,
Montana Territory
the last of the great wild buffalo
herds in the Old West were being
hunted for their hides to be shipped
by riverboat and rail to Eastern
markets. The wanton destruction of
the buffalo was a wasteful tragedy
that even Huffman recognized and his
photographs of these herds and of
the hunters and skinners are unique
and valuable records of that era.
