Float-rope Mats aka Down East Doormats
Help save whales and other
marine life, provide financial assistance to Maine
lobstermen and protect the environment. Float
rope is used by lobstermen to tether multiple traps
together on the ocean floor. The problem with float-rope
is that can entangle whales, which can lead to their
injury or death. Now, Maine lobstermen are required to
replace float-rope with more expensive sink-rope. To
ease the financial burden on the lobstermen and to keep
float-rope out of landfills, the Gulf of Maine
Foundation purchases turned-in float rope which is
recycled into colorful,
virtually indestructible, hand-woven doormats.
